As well as a title sequence for the documentary “William Eggleston in the Real World” (2005), this project is a homage to William Eggleston's photography. It's a technical exploration for how light and color can be leveraged in 3D animation to elevate mundane scenes into beautiful compositions.

Through the medium of 3d animation I was unrestricted by real world constraints  when it came to demonstrating the “magical” quality of light and color in Eggleston’s work. The sequence follows levitating objects as a through-line to connect the various environments I recreated from his photos.

William Eggleston is famous for playing a pivotal role in developing color photography's respectability as an art form due to his intentional treatment of lighting. His work was shot on Kodachrome, a discontinued slide film that has a distinctively vivid but naturalistic quality. As the dominant color film process at the time, the Kodachrome look defined the way the 20th century was seen and reproduced in color, which is why I chose to reference this.

It took several passes for each environment to get the lighting and color to look close enough to the reference photo. Working on this helped me overcome technical challenges  such as working with realistic texturing, hdri’s and caustics.
